An underwriter is the insurance company that stands behind your title policy. Because OnRecord is appointed with multiple national underwriters, we can place each file with the carrier that fits it best — and stand behind every closing we handle.

What an underwriter does, and why it matters to you

OnRecord Title is the agency: we search the record, examine it, run the escrow, and issue the policy. The underwriter is the insurance company standing behind that policy, the one that pays a covered claim and defends your title if it is ever challenged. When you receive an owner's or lender's policy from OnRecord, it is written on the paper of one of our underwriters: First National Title Insurance Company, Old Republic Title, WFG National Title Insurance Company.

Working with more than one national underwriter lets us place each file where it fits best: standard residential resales, high-value commercial transactions, construction and subdivision work, and files with unusual curative history each have an underwriter that handles them well. It also gives our escrow officers a second and third opinion on a difficult title question rather than a single company's answer.

Every policy we issue is backed by the underwriter's claims department and financial reserves, and our agency operates under Utah Insurance Department Agency License No. 976568. If you want to know which underwriter your policy will be written on, ask your escrow officer when the order opens; it is printed on the commitment.
